Solid Gold Supper
Brooklyn Grange Navy Yard Farm
Tickets $100 -$150
For NYC Honey Week’s 3rd Annual Solid Gold Supper, we're teaming up with the beekeepers-turned-distillers at Caledonia Spirits, and Chef Arden Lewis of Purslane, the events and catering arm of popular Brooklyn restaurant, Rucola, to present a family style celebration of honey, bees, and the producers who help protect them!
Picture this: Six foot tall sunflowers line the paths, arugula shimmers gently in the breeze, and sun-gold tomatoes hang ripely on the vines. Bees head home to their hives as the sun starts to set, glittering over the manhattan skyline. You’re handed a cocktail, crafted with local honey and spirits provided by Caledonia. You feel special, sparkly, on top of the world: you’ve arrived at the third Annual “Solid Gold Supper.”
Throughout the night, you'll feast on the bounty of September harvests. We'll gather around a long table at Brooklyn Grange's Brooklyn Navy Yard farm, for a multi-course, family style banquet showcasing local honey-touched dishes, and paired with craft cocktails made from sustainably-raised grain. Our featured beekeepers will be seated amongst the guests, ready to regale us with tales of their favorite queens, and tell us about the hives that have produced the liquid gold we're enjoying. And Caledonia Spirits will share their story of transitioning from apiarists to distillers in Vermont's Champlain Valley, a truly inspirational tale made more so over sips of libations and Chef Arden's fresh, clean dishes. It will be a night to remember, and balm for the weary souls of New York City's busy bees. By the evening's end, you'll be buzzing with warmth and excitement over great food, amazing drinks, and the discovery of the best local products our region has to offer.
Full menu details to come.

Wilk Apiary is saving Wednesday during NYC Honey Week to harvest and extract honey from some of our apiaries in Long Island City, Queens, New York. We are schlepping our honey extractor to LIC where Big Alice Brewery is giving us the space to demonstrate how to extract honey from frames of honey comb all made by our honeybees in the area. To celebrate the event they are also brewing a special micro-batch of beer for the occasion. This beer is using some of our local honey from Queens harvested this year. We will also have a special honey infused with hops to taste along with freshly extracted from the comb honey.
Email firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to help with the harvesting that afternoon. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50#. We might be selling fresh harvested unstrained bottle yourself honey if harvest is good enough and time allows. Must be 21 and older to taste and drink/purchase beer and have ID to prove so.
Join head beekeeper Tom Wilk of Wilk Apiary while he harvests honey at his Long Island City Apiaries. This will be a Hands-On experience and you will be working very hard. We will be opening hives on roof tops and ground level sites to collect the honey to later be extracted at Big Alice Brewery.
Tickets are $100. There will be an interview process (by email and/or phone) to choose qualified participants. This will be the only chance to visit any of our 9 apiaries during NYC Honey Week. Fees paid will be used to help with the upkeep of our NYC apiaries. Please email Tom Wilk at Wilkapiary@gmail.com with any questions and to sign up.
Other important information: Payment will be made on-line with credit/debit once you are excepted. There will be a maximum of 6 participants and all will get hands-on experience working with honeybees in an urban environment. You will also assist and work at the extraction event that starts at 6pm. Each participant will get a jar of honey they bottle themselves, Wilk Apiary will supply a meal from a local LIC restaurant at some point during the day. Wilk Apiary will supply a bee jacket and veil to use while working with the bees (you will be sharing these items with other participants).

Bees bees bees! We love them, come see why! Meet our hives and learn the basics of beekeeping in the city.
What's all the buzz about? Bees! Now more than ever, bees are having a moment in the sun for their importance in pollinating the plants that produce our food. As farmers, they've got our vote.
Tim Cerniglia of Bee Kind Farms will lead a roundtable discussion and presentation about the importance of honeybees in our urban ecosystem. He’ll cover the basics of getting started with your own hive and explain some of the tools of the trade. From there, you'll suit up and get to observe a hive-check to see what a healthy hive looks like! We'll be on the lookout for a healthy queen, bees busy making honey, pollen stores and more.
Expect to be fascinated, awed, and slightly in love with these little ladies by the time the workshop is over. You'll start to notice honeybees all over the city once you know what to look for!
